Geography Trivia Game: Name the Place Nobody Else Thinks Of

More Games

This geography trivia game is the geography edition of Rarest, where the rarest right answer wins. Every prompt is about places: countries and capitals, rivers and lakes, mountains, deserts, islands and cities. Any correct answer scores, but the less well known it is, the more it is worth. Name a country in Africa and South Africa barely lifts your hot-air balloon off the runway; Lesotho or São Tomé and Príncipe land in the Roar tier, worth twelve times as much.

Play it right here: the game above locks every round to geography. You can play the daily round (seven prompts, the same for everyone that day) or switch to Unlimited for as many rounds as you like. For a mix of all eight categories, play Rarest, the rarest answer game on the home page.

How the geography trivia game works

  • You get seven prompts, each starting with "Name a…" or "Name the…", and 25 seconds per prompt (or no clock at all with No timer).
  • Type any correct answer and press Enter. A wrong guess costs one second and you can try again.
  • Each correct answer lands in one of six tiers, from Flicker (5 points) to Inferno (100 points). Once per round, Thermal ×2 doubles one prompt.
  • After each prompt you see where your answer ranks, the best-known answers and a few of the rarest.

Common answers vs rare answers

Here is what separates a low score from a high one in the rarest answers for a few of the prompts. The left column is what most players type; the right column shows answers from the rarest tier for that prompt.

Tips to win the geography trivia game

  • Go small. Microstates, island nations and landlocked countries are rarer than the giants on every map.
  • Use the second river. For any river prompt, the tributaries (the Vorskla, the Smoky Hill) score far more than the Danube or the Mississippi.
  • Think regionally. A Scottish island from the Outer Hebrides or a Greek island from the Dodecanese beats Skye or Crete.
  • Capitals are a trap for the obvious: Cairo and Nairobi are Flicker answers, while Maseru, the capital of Lesotho, is a Roar answer.

FAQ

How many geography answers does the game accept?

About 3,917 correct answers across 40 prompts. Any correct answer scores; the rarer it is, the more points it earns.

Is the geography edition a separate game?

It is Rarest with every prompt drawn from geography. The rules, tiers and scoring are the same as the main game.

Do I need to spell place names exactly?

No. Small typos, missing accents and plurals are accepted, and common alternative names (such as Swaziland for Eswatini) count too.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account, download or paywall, and it works on phones, tablets and computers.
